Woodrat on kone, jolla hallitaan jyrsimen toimintaa. Jyrsintä voidaan liikuttaa edestakaisin 90º (tai muussa halutussa) kulmassa koneen runkoon nähden. Se voidaan myös lukita halutulle etäisyydelle rungosta, jolloin kelkkaan kiinnitettyä työkappaletta voidaan siirtää oikealle tai vasemmalle kammesta kiertäen. Työskentely näiden kahden akselin suunnassa on lähes kaiken perusta; pitkittäin tai poikittain puuhun nähden.
